      Atlassian update – 8 December 2023

      Hi everyone,

I'm pleased to let you know that we have made improvements to the Trash view in Confluence Data Center 8.7.1.

Manage your Space’s Trash more efficiently with details about who created the content ('Created by') and who deleted it ('Deleted by'). Go to Space tools > Content Tools > Trash to see this in action.

Please see our documentation to learn more about page deletion.

      Kind regards,

      Charlie Marriott

      Confluence Data Center

      Description

As a Confluence user, I would like to see more information about deleted pages, so that I can make an informed decision on whether it should be purged or restored.

As a Confluence user, I would like to sort deleted pages in the trash view, so that I can easily identify pages that should be purged or restored.

The only thing displayed when viewing trash is the page name and the date/time of deletion. I need to know more information to determine which trash should be purged. Some or all of the following would be nice.

      1. The ability to Identify the user that deleted the page.
      2. The ability to view the page contents without restoring (the source might be enough).
      3. The ability to sort deleted pages by each column.
      4. Bulk delete selection (more granular than the "Purge All" function)
      5. Context on why the page was deleted

      Current state:

      Workaround

You can view more information about deleted pages in the Space Tools audit log. This includes:

      • Page name and linked URL (page will not be displayed if URL is clicked, given it has been deleted)
      • Author (this is a user who deleted the page, not the page author/creator)
      • Content type (page or blog)
      • Date of deletion
      • Space (although not particularly relevant in this case)
      • IP address
      • Node ID
      • Method (Browser etc.)
      • Load balancer/proxy IP address

Please note that you will need to configure the 'Advanced' auditing coverage level for end user activity to capture this information.

      Access the audit log via:

      • Space tools > Audit log > Expand filters with + More > Filter by: Page deleted & Blog post deleted

[CONFSERVER-4792] Display more details for pages in the trash: "who", "why", "what"

Yes great point, thank you for calling that out f4cb74b5c51b - I've added an additional note in the workaround 👍🏽

Interesting workaround added by cmarriott - thank you!

Worth noting that the space's audit log content will only include records for page deletions if you've enabled audit logging for End User Activity at a level higher than the default "base" - you'll need at least Advanced for this.

And it'll only help for deletions from the point where you turn up the audit log levels, won't give you any historic context unfortunately.

Better than the nothing that's coming from Atlassian though

The status of this issue doesn't seem to be consistent with rbattaglin's comment from a year and a half ago. Also, is CONFSERVER-56004 not a duplicate of this issue?

            Hey everyone,

A quick update and a request for help.

We are very close to shipping a solution that would allow admins to set retention rules for page and attachment versions, and for automatically purging trash in Confluence.

However, we need your help to validate the UI and refine how we communicate the options.

We are planning to run a few user testing sessions over the next couple of weeks and would love if you could participate and give us your feedback.

            What's involved?

            • Sessions will be 45 minutes in length and conducted over video conference, with our team in Sydney.

            How do I participate?

            • We will confirm a few details before sending through a calendar invitation with video conference details
            • During the session, we will show you the UI for the feature we are planning to ship and ask you to complete a few tasks so we can learn about how easy the UI is to understand and what could be improved.
            • As a token of our appreciation, you'll receive a thank you gift following the completion of your session.

We can't guarantee that we will be able to speak with all interested parties but we definitely appreciate your interest and enthusiasm to help us make Confluence easier and more enjoyable to use.

            Thanks,

Renan | Product Manager, Confluence Server and Data Center

I also was in the need to investigate about why special pages were deleted and by whom - this is currently not possible at all,
Thus please follow up and provide here more functionality

Please implement this, it is very hard today to understand what is in the Trash and what should be purged or restored.
