      Summary of Bug

When viewing a Microsoft Excel file inside Confluence, some formatting is not rendered correctly. Examples are :

      • crossed-out words are not crossed out
      • underlines and upperlines are not displayed
      • embossed text is no longer embossed
      • line breaks in cells are not respected
      • Rotated cells are not respected

      Steps to reproduce

      1. Create a Excel document
      2. Enter formatting like underline, and strikethrough
      3. Insert the Excel document into Confluence
      4. View the file using the Viewfile macro

      Findings

This is how the document is supposed to look like :

This is how the document looks like when using Viewfile macro :

[CONFSERVER-23974] Excel files not rendered properly using Viewfile macro

@Natasha, I reviewed the 5.7 release notes, but it's not clear how the previewer meets our primary use case. We have hundreds of Confluence pages that display a single worksheet in full so that the user doesn't have to click into the attachment to see the contents, and it's not content that makes sense to be on a table in Confluence because of the management of the excel data - calculations, formatting, width, etc. But, it is very important that they view the entire content in full when navigating to the page - we don't want them having to click into an attachment to view it as we need it easily visible and scrollable. Our few IE users utilize the Edit in Document feature to easily manage changes to it; think of it as an analytics spreadsheet - not something you want to build in Confluence, but important to easily view in full screen and is the sole purpose of the page.

How does Previewer support this need?

Thanks everyone, for the feedback here. This issue looks much better in the new file previewer released in Confluence 5.7. We are no longer investing in the viewfile macros and all future improvements will be made to the new previewer. Please try it out in the new previewer and if this remains an issue, raise a ticket against that.

I'll add two more problems I've found.
            1. Using the "Format as Table" function on Excel results in Confluence displaying completely unformatted text.
            2. A cell with more text than fits in the column width will display over the top of adjacent cells in Excel. In Confluence, the column width is expanded.

Seems this has been open for quite some time without any movement. Confluence 5.2 still doesn't respect line breaks in cells. Another +1 for this feature request/bug fix!

We're having an issue with the viewfile macro as well, but only with IE8 and IE9.
We have pages where we insert several excel files. When we get to about the 10th or the 11th one, they stop rendering the excel format. If I insert the excel file where it starts happening earlier in the page, then it will render fine.
But, once one excel file stops rendering correctly, all those past it don't render correctly.
All excel files are the same format - they have the second line that is a column header row that is shaded. Consists of about 4 columns and may consist of 3-20 rows.

            The only formatting is
            Heading 2
<insert of the view file macro>

            Heading 2
            <insert of view file macro>
            etc.
            etc.

The page exports to PDF fine - all tables render fine.
The page also renders correctly in the latest versions of Safari, FF, and Chrome - it is only IE8 and 9. Don't know about 10 as I don't have access to that version.

It is a major issue for us because more than half of all of our Confluence pages contain excel files because we are very data intensive. We are in the health care industry and have a significant number of pages relevant to protocols, measures, and ICD codes.

We are on Jira 6.x - it is still an issue with that version.
This seems to be going on a long time given the number of versions affected.
Is there any idea of when these issues will be fixed.

This macro is becoming less useful over time due to the number of issues associated with it being reported with not only excel, but there is no support for PDF as there is no workaround for those issues, and the associated Edit in Document feature only works in IE.
