I'm still having this issue with Atlassian Companion 2.1.0 (and Confluence 7.4.4 (IIS reverse proxy configuration)). When I try to edit attachments containing the '(' and ')' symbols in their filename, I get a "Download Failed, head back to Confluence to try again." error. CONFSERVER-57769 should probably be re-opened to address this.

Ah, our reports concerning Companion should've probably gone to CONFSERVER-57769... unfortunately, it's closed, while this ticket is still open

Comments by dbad1cf16c67 and 99c22ef3acac are still true as of Confluence Server 7.16.5, Companion 1.4.1. "(", ")" and "+" in the filename cause Companion to fail.

As of Confluence Data Center 7.13.0, if an attachment has parentheses "()" in it, the file cannot be edited using Companion. The symptom appears to be that the companion application cannot authenticate.

I discovered today that having a hash character (#) in the file name of an attachment breaks "edit it office" in both Firefox, IE9 and IE10. This is in Confluence 5.3.1.

I would suggest renaming the title of this issue to remove the "on some browsers" part, as it now seems to be mostly browser-independent.

Perhaps the documentation should warn users about the use of special characters, but I do not see this mentioned any where. The problem with special characters exists in many different contexts and just wont go away.

Many macros and plugins do not behave well and have unpredictable results when special characters are used:

            • Office Connector
            • Attachment filenames
              • Office documents
              • Graphic files
            • Links and Anchors
            • Pagetree
            • Third Party Plugins
              • Customware/ServiceRocket Reporting and Scaffolding plugins
              • Linking Plugin

This list is by no means complete, but I am sure you get the idea of how intrenched this problem has become.

Another issue is searching Confluence for the use of Special Characters so that content can be modified. How can this be done?

            Hi stephen.gramm@nasa.gov

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, three years is a very long time for an issue to be open, but we have to prioritise our issues and deal with those that have the biggest impact on our customers first. This does mean that some issues do sit on our backlog for some time before we are able to deal with them. I would very much like to be able to address this issue, which is why it is still on the backlog after 3 years without having been closed.

I really appreciate the passion and persistence that you have, as soon as we have any more information on this issue I'll get the ticket updated with details.

OPEN for THREE YEARS - Is there any possibility that the special characters or reserved character issue will be fixed? I see so many related cases and nothing is being done about the problem.

Atlassian Confluence documentation should at least provide details about this reported problem or address the root cause so users would know not to use special characters in page names, attachment names, graphic file names or links and other plugins where it will certainly create problems.

We have the issue in Confluence v5.2.5
