Profile pictures in comments appear as red x's to anonymous users in Internet Explorer when user profiles are restricted.

      If a site allows anonymous users to access content, but restricts their access to user profiles, user profile pictures will be displayed as an empty square with a red x as the image is not "viewable" to the anonymous user. In Firefox and Chrome, this issue does not occur as the image simply does not display. In Safari, a box containing a question mark is displayed.
