If a Confluence instance has just gone over its license limit, and someone creates a new page, everything goes fine until it's time to save. Then Confluence blows up with a license error:

This Confluence installation is not licensed for additional users
You have exceeded the maximum number of users for your license. You will still be able to view content, but in order to create or edit content, you must reduce the number of active users in the installation.

And.. loses all the page content the user just added.

This has to be the worst possible way of handling the situation. Can we not warn users somehow when they start creating new content that it can't be saved? If not, can we at least somehow preserve the content and display it on the error page (in a textarea for cut&pasting)?

      Quotes from users:

The most frustrating part is that everything I put in was just lost and I have to recreate the last hr of work notes!

      and

Additionally, it would be nice to display this error before hitting the save button to prevent loss of data entered as I've just lost the data I spent the last 15 minutes authoring.

Seems I can't vote for this issue, is it because it is closed/resolved?

This is affecting our company too.

I would have expect that Confluence would prevent the limit to be crossed in the first place. That would prevent any error and disruptions to active users edits.

It's not a stretch to wonder if that's not intentional to 'encourage' companies to increase their license.

Can you please reopen this issue and work on it? At the very least, preventing edit would ensure that hours of work don't get lost, and prevent alienating further your users.

Our entire company just hit this problem this morning. This morning a number of us were editing or creating new pages and we all lost our data when we tried to do a save. Multiple hours of work were lost. I agree with Bob that something should be done. Please don't allow users to be added that exceed the license limit, or do a check on Edit/Create clicks and indicate that licenses have been exceeded or simply disable all functions that go into any sort of edit mode or something!

For anyone else reading this issue, there is a way that you can get some of your changes back. What I did was click the browser's Back button. (I was using Chrome.) At first you'll freak out because all of your changes will be gone. However, if you look closely, there are some hyperlink options that are displayed. Click on the Re-enable Editing link. (You may have to do this multiple times; hopefully not but you may.) Then, you will get back to your last edit (or close to your last edit). Of course, you still cannot save it but at least you can put it into a Word doc or something local so that you do not lose everything.

Matt, perhaps a more simple solution could help protect against data loss. Only enforce the user level exceeded on restart and this would prevent any editing being started.

This would be a nice improvement to make, but given the complexity of fixing it and the number of customers who have hit this issue (no watchers and only one vote in six years!), I'm closing as "Won't Fix".
