Jira macros and gadgets failing with 504 (gateway timeout) error

Issue Summary

When using certain complex filters in the JIRA Issue/Filter macro or in Jira gadgets such as the Two Dimensional Filter Statistics macro, it will either fail to display the preview or throw a 504 status error at the UI.

The filter used can either be a complex filter that takes a considerable amount of time to process or it will return a high number of issues.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Create a complex filter on Jira
2. Use this filter on Confluence, in the JIRA Issue/Filter macro or the Two Dimensional Filter Statistics one

Expected Results

The macro should display its preview.

Actual Results

• For the JIRA Issue/Filter macro, the following error is thrown at the UI:

  Received the following HTTP error code from the server:504

• For the Two Dimensional Filter Statistics macro, it simply won't save the settings and won't display the preview. The following response comes from the request:

In both cases, the request takes 10 seconds to fail.

We also noticed the issue is intermittent. For some cases, the filter may not work at the first attempt but trying again might work.

Workaround

Currently there is no other workaround besides decreasing the filter's complexity so it can return results quicker.
