[CONFCLOUD-67895] Ability to modify image properties and add border in new editor
Has this feature disappeared or am I blind?
I saw the border and successfully applied it earlier this week and now I don't see it.
Yes, finally but grateful nonetheless that this feature was able to roll out. Thank you! Works for me!
This isn't working 100% of the time. I have an image in a layout and the border doesn't appear.
I'm finding it doesn't work when the image is in a page layout.
Does Confluence plan to update its Conversion Tool so it converts an Old Editor border to a New Editor border? We can create a border in New Editor now but cannot convert an existing border. Is this item being tracked separately?
Thank you. The added feature is a subset of what exists on Server, but is a huge improvement to readability.
While this is great to finally have in theory - anyone using the Refined for Confluence Cloud addon you'll still have problems.
Borders fail to render on images encapsulated within UI elements like UI Steps or UI Tabs etc.
They show just fine on the edit screen but are missing on page view.
We unfortunately use this addon/macros heavily in our documentation so this fix hasn't really solved anything for us sadly.
Thanks! Tutorials with screenshots containing white areas towards the edges, are much easier to read now!
Hi all,
This feature is now rolled out to 100% of Confluence customers, we hope you enjoy using it!
We are looking at how we might bring this feature to Jira soon.
Finally! Only about 4 years in the making so we can have a border.
Now hopefully Atlassian has some time to work on a few of the pressing Jira tickets with hundreds of comments that have been open for 4+ years and have been actively researched by Atlassian with absolutely no updates.
00304f1742ad and a338feacbc1b, features typically slowly hit different cloud sites at different times in phases. They haven't announced anything so it is most likely in the process of rolling out everywhere and we will hear something from Atlassian shortly. I'm sure it's coming to you soon... good find everyone! This was one of the biggest pain points in the new editor (in my opinion). Glad to be able to separate images from each other and text to help frame ideas!
I'm still just seeing the standard toolbar (with the alignment and wrapping options, link, alt text, etc.). I even tried logging out and back in. Maybe the change is taking a while to propagate everywhere.
A little breath of fresh air appreciated. Thanks !
More line thickness choices and custom border colors would be appreciated, though (no, we are never satisfied ).
Shadow options and/or border styles would be a very nice to have (like in the legacy editor).
To find it, click on the picture itself. There is a little square on the left side of the toolbar that appears under the picture
Awesome. My white background screenshots now look like a screen, not just text hanging in the middle of nowhere.
I see comments here where people are stating the feature has been restored, but I just logged into our confluence site and I'm not seeing it. Where is the option? Is it in the picture toolbar that pops up below an image when you click on the image? I'm just seeing the same toolbar as before.
Nice that you included line weight! Not sure about the 3 shades of black/grey, but I'll take it!!
The image border option appeared today in our Confluence cloud space.
@Owen Wallis - Would you provide another update since your March 28th comment? When will this feature be delivered?
This is a crucial feature for anyone who documents procedures with screenshots. Also VERY important is the ability to RESIZE images which also used to be available.
Hi 48351c5642c3 - that is a glorious comment, thank you!
We have finalised design/UX and are actively building the Image borders feature. I'll post when I have an update on rollout timings.
P L E A S E, P L E A S E, P L E A S E ! ! ! !
RESTORE THE IMAGE BORDER FEATURE!

Seriously, is it really that hard? The only thing more irritating than this lost feature is the awkwardness of the workarounds. You have pages and pages of requests. I hate this important feature ommission and I'm clearly NOT ALONE!
*+RESTORE IT!
+RESTORE IT!*
RESTORE IT!
@Sylvain Ménard - pls read my 1/25/23 post above - here are a few things you can do in the meantime until they get our features BACK (this will enable you to add borders to your images, etc.):
- Ask your company to enable the Legacy Editor Template (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/How-do-I-enable-the-legacy-editor-template/qaq-p/1650775): If enabled, when you create a new Confluence cloud page, you are given a list of templates to apply---and you can choose the Legacy Editor Page template, which will bring back the Legacy Image Toolbar.
- Image toolbar: If you can't get the Legacy Editor Template (per the above bullet), but you have imported a previous Confluence server page to the Confluence cloud, that imported page will still have the legacy image toolbar intact (it did for us). When creating a new page, you can instead just make a copy of the imported server page to maintain the feature. The Source Editor plug-in may be helpful for this too, as you can try to copy & paste code from a previous page to a new page to hopefully maintain the formatting.
We have just migrated from Server to Cloud and this is a serious issue for a lot of people in the organization.
For migrated pages, this issue makes us keep from switching to the new editor most of the time if possible.
Now we have to find à way as efficient and as fast to add borders to our screen captures (and we have a lot), for example.
Thanks,
Sylvain
Hi folks,
Sorry for the radio silence on this issue
We've figured out design/UX for this
Can't give a firm date on delivery, but this feature is going into development next quarter - so hopefully won't be too long till we can ship this to you all
@Anton Marcuse - Yes. It is hard to understand why the issue is requiring so much analysis - a feature that, apparently, previously existed.
This is such a simple feature and yet so useful for a documentation tool!
And still, no progress after years?
Tips I've learned so far:
- Remove pop-ups: Click the Profile icon > Settings > Edit (under the Settings tab (default)), and then clear the Page card hover option & click Submit.
- Copy everything in your page before saving/publishing: We sometimes have some connection errors with using the cloud (could be our own company's issue), which will sometimes cause my page to go blank (1 time lasted for ~1 hour). I am just in the habit anyway of saving the whole page before I save/publish. Luckily each time this happened, my page was still saved, but when I spend a lot of time on a page, I still copy my stuff just in case.
1. Before saving/publishing, select all the text and images in the page (Ctrl+A) and press Ctrl+C to copy. Everything you selected is safely in your system's clipboard.
2. If the page saves OK, all good. If not and goes blank, you lose connection, etc.---paste (Ctrl+V) your work from the clipboard to a backup page somewhere, and contact your Support or wait a bit and re-try. I think you can create your own personal cloud account to use as a backup in case this happens (if you apply restrictions as to who can view, as you do not want to publicize any confidential company info), and then delete the page once your page is recovered.
Hope this helps someone!
@owenwallis - Oh no—all the images I added in this comment won't display, ughhh. Pls let me know if you have an email where I can send you all the screenshots showing the issues?
@owen wallis https://jira.atlassian.com/secure/ViewProfile.jspa?name=owallis%40atlassian.com — thank you so much for replying to us and asking for feedback! In the past 2 days, here are the issues I have seen and the features I'm missing and need to have to do my job efficiently and quickly:
- Image toolbar: I desperately need the image toolbar back so I can add a border & change the pixels for consistency to my images:
Using a "grab handle" is not working for me and now my images all look different sized (which will not give a good user experience). I insert hundreds of screenshots for our user docs.
- Change image inserting back to left-aligned vs centered: Pls ensure all images come in as left-aligned vs centered... Having the image come in as centered makes me have to change it every single time, and I have hundreds of images.
- I cannot find the Source Editor? I need this as I use it a lot:
- Include Page macro adds to much space above & below: I use single-sourcing/reusable text in hundreds of pages—create one "source" page that has a list of steps or a note or a text blurb, and then insert the source page in other pages using the Include Page macro (below page uses 3 different source pages):
When I save/publish the page—it now has way too much space between the steps, so the ones with the macros are spaced out and look horrible, and then you have the page's text, which is normal-spaced:
- Change space colors: In old instance, I could update our space to our company colors using: Space tools > Look and Feel > Color Scheme — now we are very limited with one option in Customise Colour Scheme Settings (grayed out the color #'s):
- Turn OFF pop-ups: Pls—how do we turn off these constant pop-ups, while going thru the tree and also every time I save a page, etc... I work in this tool all, day, every day.
- I can use an imported page to create new pages and the toolbar is there, but I get a message saying—is this OK? It also will be tiring to keep using another page to keep creating new ones, but will do it if we have to...
- Notes: I set up a page with a note, and then insert this page into other pages using the Page Include macro. The source page has the Note icon image in it (left side of the note):
But in the page that is using the macro to bring it in---it removes the Note icon & only displays the text in a purple box w/o a Note icon:
Please help us get these features back! Thx for asking, and let me know if you need to contact me with any questions or anything—I am 100% willing to help!
Hi 89b2dbbca9cb and everyone giving their time to comment on this thread.
I'm the PM responsible for this areas. I'm meeting with my team next week to discuss this feature, and the other feature gaps between Server and Cloud.
These are some of the main issues I'm tracking for Confluence (these are specific to Media - so files, images and video):
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-67554 | Resize images by pixels |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-65302 | Include a link to attachments on other pages |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-65749?_ga=2.202759825.1232854915.1574046401-1728863665.1565589405 | Insert images from the web |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-67895 | Image borders |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-67745 | Comments on images |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-65344 | Allow adding attachments from page or space |
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-67779 | Show attachment as image or a link |
If I'm missing any other major features you have on Server, but not on Cloud please let me know.
I have some hope as the https://marketplace.atlassian.com/ has plug-ins, so maybe these will help! They have one for the Source Editor, some apps for images, and prob have ones for tables (I haven't done any tables yet, so don't know the issues), etc. So, maybe plug-ins are the solution! (I pray so!)
I did the research study and was shown a prototype of this functionality.
Would you be able to explain what the technical issue is with implementing this? Is there some deep underlying limitation that we're not aware of?
Oh my gosh—in NEW pages I create---the Border & resizing features are gone. In my pages that got copied to the cloud the features are there, but any NEW pages I create—the little image toolbar is GONE and has very limited image features (a "grab" handle doesn't help proportionally size my images, there is no border anymore, the images are all brought in a centered vs left-aligned to go under steps, etc.). Bummed that so many features we all use and need were removed.
Would you like the ability to create a border around an image?
Yes.
It's very hard for us to determine what kind of border? We've had several breakout sessions and international in-person lunches to determine which kind of border we should give.
1px solid #000000 for starters
then dashed and dotted border
and be able to change colors so it looks better depending on the image. Sometimes black or white is better.
Once a little menu with border options is created, it could be reused for whole paragraph sections or columns.
Agreed. Please add a basic 1px solid black border option. Each image individually - not all or nothing on all images on the page.
Please start with that as soon as you can. Planning to add something more custom and fancy in future releases.
Many thanks
Martina
Henry is correct: An option to add a basic black border would be a vast improvement. I think most people would greatly prefer a basic border option being provided NOW as opposed to a promise of fancier border options being promised sometime in the undefined future. Especially when the future never seems to arrive.
Borders are NOT a difficult feature to implement, and you used to have image border options in old editor. So, I don't understand why it is taking literally years to re-implement this feature?
1px solid #000000
...to start with. This is better than having no border as currently and would cover 99 % of the use cases. If we have this we can talk about more fancy features as Shadows, Line Styles, Colors etc.
To repeat what others have said:
Would you like the ability to create a border around an image?
Yes.
It's very hard for us to determine what kind of border? We've had several breakout sessions and international in-person lunches to determine which kind of border we should give.

Could you please help us give our Head CEO Aesthetics UI/UX some pointers? They say a border breaks continuity in the whole paperflow smoothing of the screen.
Many images have either a transparent background or a solid white background (most of ours are screen captures that have a solid white background). When this happens, it is very difficult to see the boundaries of the image vs. the background of the Confluence page. Certainly anyone with UX or basic design experience would recognize this. If I need to dedicate an hour of my time to explain it to anyone, I'm certainly willing to do that as, in the end, it is a simply ROI analysis - 1 hour to explain vs. hours of manually adding borders to images before I import them into Confluence.
Please please add this feature
- it's the users' choice to use border or not on the pages.
- it's not on your CEO's aesthetic preference of the continuity ............

Add a border option.
Basic accessibility features previously available in Confluence and widely available in other KB/Wiki softwares shouldn't require already very busy people to participate in a 1 hour "research study" fam... you're sitting on something that literally makes your product usable as a documentation tool. OneNote is honestly better than confluence these days it's sad
Hi all,
Thank you so much for your votes and comments on this feature.
We are doing further research on this topic and would love to invite you to take part in an upcoming customer research study!
What’s involved in the research:
- Sessions are 1 hour and conducted over video conference, so you can participate from anywhere around the globe.
- Sessions will start next week on Wednesday, November 2nd.
- During the research, we'll start with a general chat to get to know you, then, you might explore a prototype and complete some tasks.
- As a token of our appreciation, you'll receive an e-gift card within 5 days of completing your session.
If you're interested in taking part, please contact me at edonnelly@atlassian.com to schedule a time that works for you.
If you have any other questions, feel free to reply to this message or email me directly at edonnelly@atlassian.com. We look forward to meeting you!
Cheers,
Emma
Agreed. We have had to add another step in doc creation, by manually adding a border in Snagit before adding to Confluence. Otherwise it completely blends in.
Please the ability to include a border/shadow on images, not having this make documentation so much harder to read where multiple screenshots are taken from applications/webpages where the background is white.
This is an unmissable feature for me. Certainly if you are coming from a previous version (as I did). This is a kind request to make this available in the latest version as well.
Hi everyone,
This is Owen from the Media Platform team. Thank you for your comments. I do read every one of them.
I can't provide a firm date for when we might deliver this feature. But I wanted to reassure you that my team is actively planning how we might build this capability.
Ah, yet another one of those features that was taken away from Server with a feature request made years ago, and then pretty much ignored by Atlassian for the next several years because it's "not as important".
I want this so I can hopefully specify a macro in a template which automatically finds a page to include using the include macro - so I kinda want to be able to specify this in a template:
{include:DOC:SomePrefix$content.getTitle()
Was trying to add a border to a picture today, could not get it done. Now I read this feature has been removed.
But... but.. but... WHY??
Please make this come back SOON. You're only getting feedback from a limited number of users, but I can tell you that it is a really big issue. Why on earth migrate to a new editor that is not providing feature parity on things like this. And then even sticking it to "Gathering interest" for 3 years isn't how I would describe customer-friendly.
Adding a border to a screenshot would make the documentation much easier to read. Yes, I could use paint to add a border, but we've had this opportunity in the server version and since we've had to move to the cloud, it's gone. It's very annoying that basic functions are not there anymore!
The fact Confluence is primarily a knowledgebase platform you'd expect image manipulation to be #2 on the top 10 list (behind text formatting) to have nailed down and working perfectly.
We've just migrated from Server to Cloud and the modern editor is nothing short of awful when dealing with images.
Trying to sell Confluence Cloud to our user base as "new and improved and with features that didn't exist in Server" falls pretty flat when almost every image you paste in ends up blurry in a non-native size without a method to force it to native or append a border.
I'd argue in documentation scenarios attached images are far more important, while tables are also lacking and can be glitchy - at least they work in their basic form.
Having to click each image to load the native size where it looks perfectly clear is a waste of time when scrolling through a page with many images.
Our team has just reverted to keeping an old classic page handy to clone so that documentation pages don't look like garbage.
I'm still using the old editor. However, the images with borders have errors, forcing them to be removed. This caused a very big problem as practically all our documents have broken images. And it's "only" a few thousand documents. We are not migrating to the new editor precisely because we can't resize through pixels and also because we can't place borders on images.
UPDATE 24/08/2022: The image effects issue in the old editor has been resolved.
This feature is really important in order to create pages with better layout and image visibility
Without it, we did a step back respect to Confluence Server
Please add it!!!!
Imagine, a new car model would have no longer the feature to adjust seats. The product manager would have got fired.
Documenting without image borders makes docs look awful, specially when presenting to stakeholders.
Please add back the ability to resize a picture by right clicking and adding a numerical value. This way, as a tech writer, I can make all my chosen icons the exact same size.
Whaat?? Still really no way to add border (and other image properties there were)?? A couple of years ago Confluence was a brilliant documentation tool for us engineers but then there was an UI update that broke most usability, didn't really notice anything improve, and all this mandatory?? Please either add what is missing from the "old" version or at least give an easy way to get the proper editor back (now that many pages are already created with the new UI, guess the editor needs to be switchable per page, otherwise the change will probable break a lot).
What? No more borders? Please Atlassian, restore this essential functionality asap!
Having no more borders is regressive. Before: upload an image and click a button. Today: use an image editor to add a border to the image, then upload it. This progression is counter-intuitive. Result? Regression.
This has literally been an issue for years and was a previously-existing feature until the migration to the new editor. It may seem like a silly thing, but this little feature is HIGHLY useful as I document user interfaces with many screen shorts and the border helps separate the screen shot from the confluence text. Photoshopping every image just to import it with a border is a tedious and, frankly, ridiculous process.
Please bring back the image borders. We are currently migrating from server to cloud version and having old pages that still use the editor with image borders (even after migration) and new pages that don't is a real problem.
To make everything consistent we would have to go through all old pages and convert them to the new format and loose all borders in the process.
I am also very much missing this feature. I see the ticket is not even assigned yet. Any status update?
Remember even after this is implemented and makes it into the next production version, those of us working at big companies like me will still have to wait ages for the next upgrade.
For a well-known content management software not have basic features like adding borders to images and more...is simply beyond me!! That too when the server versions have/had all these !
Bring back all these basic features....NOW !!
I can't stress how much of a pain not having this capability is. Part of the reason we use confluence is to rapidly create and edit useful content. Having to manually edit screencaps, and manually add a border, is anything but rapid. And as others have noted, my documentation looks lousy unless I manually add image borders and I shouldn't have to do that.
Seriously, please fix this. I like the new Confluence editor, but the way it handles images sucks! We need borders, and less than 10 miles of whitespace above and below the image.
upvoted again - as the previous item was closed without transferring the votes.
Please get this back in as soon as possible.
Seriously,
Can we accelerate this?
Extremely disappointing when features are removed. It's a regression.
I completely echo Beth Anne's sentiment:
" You physically cannot set out good documentation without being able to border off your images, and we can't even use tables effectively for that - something even OneNote has available. I've stopped recommending Atlassian as a product on the basis of this feature not being available, I used to spend ages carrying on about how good this software was.
Hurry this one up please.
Another thing that is no more available in the cloud version
Better replace your editor with a plain ASCII editor if you are unable to implement and keep simple features.
