            I simply can't leave the above suggested registry edits standing without a comment. Anyone using Basic Authentication without SSL is stark raving mad. It sincerely does not matter how convenient or inconvenient it is to find other methods of getting to the files – allowing users to give away their passwords in clear text is not acceptable security for any service provider. Basic authentication is already an abomination for security even when all requests are transmitted via SSL (because it offers no logout option), but without encryption it is a completely intolerable protocol.

            Glad it's working for you, Adam. For reference, the UseBasicAuth resgistry setting is for Windows XP and earlier systems. The BasicAuthLevel registry setting is for Windows Vista and later systems. You shouldn't need to apply both values. For more information, check out KB841215.

            Never mind, a reboot was required, working now. Thanks!

            I'm still having this issue!

            I have office connector 1.14 and Confluence 3.4.1. FireFox 3.6.12 and IE 8. Windows 7.

            I have set the 2 reg keys:
            [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters]
            "BasicAuthLevel"=dword:00000002
            "UseBasicAuth"=dword:00000002

            And it still opens in Read-only mode.

            Please help if you can!

            Thanks,
            Adam

            It also works with SSL enabled Conflucence now. But I noticed that I have to install a CA signed certificate and import the CA root certificate as a Trusted Root Certificate into the Internet Explorer. A self-signed certificate won't work.

            Solved! I had to set also BasicAuthLevel=2 to make it work with a non-SSL connection.

            Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
            [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters]

            Thanks, Joe. I have installed the new Office Connector plugin, but Word documents are still opened in read-only mode. This is my setup: Windows 7, Office 2007, Firefox 3.6
            I haven't setup SSL yet and accessing Confluence with http://conflunce.mydomain.tld:8080/. The UseBasicAuth registry value is set to 2.
            From your comment of 13/Oct/10 12:23 AM I understood, that I have to use SSL or set the registry value UseBasicAuth.
            Did I missed something?
