Is this still an issue? Should we still use the symbols directly? or does it accept HTML syntax?

Displayed correctly and to spec by GitHub. Alas, not by Bitbucket.

I stumbled upon this issue because I need to use the pipe symbol "|" in a table without causing a new column. Using ǀ does not work, unfortunately.

Sorry, my fault. The readme.md file was encoded as ANSI, changing the encoding to UTF8 solved the problem, the copyright symbol does now show up as expected.

Using the unicode characters for trademark™ and copyright © somehow does not work for me. Or did you mean one should use tm and c?

This is intentional for security reasons. No HTML is supported. As stated before, you can still use the actual character for tm anyway though.
