I have a maven installation setup just for Bamboo's usage, and didn't have any need for $HOME/.m2/settings.xml, so I just configured $M2_HOME/conf/settings.xml instead. After enabling maven2 dependency support in 2.5, I was getting the error message:

Failed to execute plugin 'Maven2 Build Processor' with error: When not aligning with a user install you must specify a local repository location using the setLocalRepositoryDirectory( File ) method

I then copied to the settings.xml file to the .m2 directory of the bamboo server's user's home directory, and everything worked fine.
