As a Trello user, I'd like to add local file links as hyperlinks on cards' descriptions

      User Problem

Currently, some users use the card's description section to paste some important information, which can include local links to files on the network, or on their own device. Examples include, but may not be limited to:

      • fmp://
      • kalsta://
      • lucid://
      • powerlink://
      • file://

However, due to a recent change we implemented to improve the card's back experience on Trello and unify onto the Atlassian platform Editor, this functionality is no longer available.

      Suggested Solutions

We should look in a new way to ensure our editor can parse local file links to ensure it can understand and convert these links to hyperlinks instead of keeping them in plain text.

Need this for Obsidian notes, hope this will be re-added.

I'm astonished this hasn't been fixed. This is clearly a regression bug and is causing data loss and process failures for users.

a27510681591 Are you able to bump this somehow? It's insane that this hasn't been fixed.

Hi all, I found a workaround. Instead of adding the link via the card itself, you can create an automation that adds a link based on when a custom field is set or filled.

I have an automation that fills the link based on a custom field. So when I fill in a local file path in that custom field, it will add that link and "localexplorer:"

This automation looks something like this:
"when custom field "CUSTOMFIELDNAMEHERE" is set, add link "localexplorer:%CUSTOMFIELDNAMEHERE""

The next step is using browser extension Local Explorer. This allows you to open the links from the trello cards to your local directory.

This works on Windows, not sure about MacOS.

            Hope this helps!

Would also push for this to be seen as a regression and not a feature suggestion.

Trello's ability to work with local links (for me file://, obsidian://, and others) is a huge reason to keep using it as my main system of record for what I need to do and then linking to other systems/software as needed. This change completely breaks that integration.

As I mentioned on case 701...

Our daily work is affected, it is NOT a feature request - by changing the behaviour of links you have made a gross mistake, productive data has been lost!
Now support treats it like a trivial matter, a low level feature request, and shifts it back and forth within cases.
Mega unprofessional and a huge disappointment what your support is doing.
If one of you had read the reports and comments carefully, this would probably not have happened.
Please wake up and classify the case correctly as a BUG with priority HIGH, and INFLUENCE GRAVING.

Just found the same thing as b73a73161422 - Trello has deleted all the links to Evernote that I had in the Description field.

Surely this is now a bug not a feature request (to restore a feature that was removed)?

a27510681591 Are you Trello staff? Can you promote this to a bug or raise one please?

In other cases than *file://* (can be entered in the link field and is accepted by Trello), the behavior is much worser:

for ex. powerlink:// or any other link type  that is not valid (in the "new" view of Trello):

            • link can not be entered anymore (marked as invalid in the link editing field)
            • existing links like "powerlink://" has been removed / are unasked deleted by the Trello system over night
            • no possibility to get the link or any information back - NO workaround available - LOSS of data!

Trello is a great tool for tracking and managing tasks but it's clearly not suited to holding large amounts of unstructured data (or large amounts of structured data, for that matter) hence we use Obsidian for knowledge management.

We can easily link from an Obsidian note to a Trello card so that's fine, and we used to be able to link back to the Obsidian note to access the knowledge base.

It was very disappointing to hear that this functionality was removed with no warning or anouncement.  I spent a long time thinking I was doing something wrong, only to find an "update" had removed the functionality.

I hope the engineering team is able to reinstate this functionality quickly, after all, this change was introduced "to make our system dramatically faster and easier for us to maintain".

            Same here and I'd add:

            evernote:///

In fact - why force validation of the URL at all? Just let us set whatever we want as a URL, as previous behaviour.

This is a massively annoying change.
