Source Tree slow on big repositories

When opening a big repo (several gigs) in source tree, the display hangs forever. Opening the same repo in gitk and even jumping their from commit to commit is not a problem. With this performance issue we can't use source tree. On the command line git status, git log or other commands are fast enough.
