The benefit of this would be if the section is collapsed, to know that there's something to display. This is especially useful in Lion since the 'disclosure triangle' is no longer displayed on the left of the top-level items, like it was in Snow Leopard and previously, so you can't tell if there's something to see without clicking 'Show'.
