"File status" UI layout broken

      There is a bug in the File Status panel, the wide UI bar which contains 4 components

      • the dropdown with "Pending files, sorted by path" at the left
      • the dropdown with "Flat list (single column)"
      • the Search box
      • the dropdown with "External Diff"

      Sometimes the layout of this thin bar is broken in a way that makes it roughly seven times taller.
