We have nested submodules and it would be nice if they could be supported in the same way as submodules are when it comes to guarding against accidental commits in the parent project (The dialog warning you that you have uncommitted changes in your submodule).

If I use git status in the root then it will show me changes even in recursive submodules so the data should be available.
