Left UI nav does not have clear visual hierarchy

The new UI on the left makes it harder to distinguish between items under a heading and headings themselves; the hierarchy is confusing at a glance.

Possible solutions are to reduce vertical whitespace between branches, stashes, etc., or to indent them differently from the heading text. Currently the large vertical whitespace plus the fact that the heading text is on the same left coordinate as the subject text is hard to read.
