This generally drives me mental when I find myself working on a project with submodules – accidentally committing to a detached head.

Please add a feature that blocks users from committing to a detached head. There is no reason for doing this through a GUI. If there was a rational reason for doing this sort of commit you could do it from the command line.

If you are realistic about helping people work with submodules this is a critical feature.
