SRCTREE-756 added recursive updating of submodules, which is good, but occasionally, I need to clone a repository non-recursively.

Forcing recursive cloning means that what would habe been a task of a few minutes becomes a very time consuming fetch of a load of submodules that I didn't need.

Having recursive as the default option sounds like the right thing, but having an advanced option to turn it off would be useful too.
