Testing Notes
Q: Can you reopen the epic via the same menu?
A: 
No. You must reopen the epic via JIRA View Issue.
Q: Test when Epic status is stale/out of date. Try updating and dragging epic around.
A: Marking an epic as Done when the state is stale will have no ill effect, as the issue still exists. Ranking similarly is okay. Adding an issue to an epic that has since been removed will work but then afterwards the epic will disappear.
Q: What happens when the last issue in a completed epic is deleted/removed?
A: Behaves as normal?
Q: Will updating the status affect quick/instant filters on that epic?
A: If an epic is selected (filtering active) and then marked as done, that filter will be removed. Should not affect any other filters.
Q: Can you change the statuses of the epic in any way? Deleting, renaming the status and messing up the epic?
A: Yes - the "options" are configurable from JIRA's Custom Field admin UI (Configure). It will continue to work until there is only one option left. It will pick the "last" option as the one to set when marking as Done.

after done-ing the epic, drag and drop of issues into any epic in the list does not trigger the epic's hover state.
I agree with the revised order:
Edit name
View in JIRA
Mark as Done
I think the title is good without a question mark, writing style is here but does not seem to address this: https://developer.atlassian.com/design/language.html
I would change the message from:
"You are about to mark the epic Blue as Done. This will hide it from view in Plan mode."
to something like:
"The epic Name will be marked as Done. The epic will no longer be displayed on the board. Any issues which are part of the epic will not be affected."
Placement of the mark as done menu item could be at the bottom because it probably wont be used as frequently...

Agreed, this will be addressed in re-work.
possible bug: I'm not seeing the epic disappear after marking as done, even with hard refresh. json from the server says done:false. perhaps got it in this state by either adding the status to the default screen or by trying to mark it as done from a status other than TODO
I have raised a documentation task to cover your second observation.
For your first one, I have raised a separate story to be done later.
Some observations :
- When an epic has issue linked to it, and the epic is marked as done, the epic's name in the issue's row is still shown. Shouldn't there be some visual clue as to the status of that epic? Maybe strikethrough the epic's name?
When marking an epic as done, it should be able to be reopend/unmarked as done. I couldn't find a way to do this. The epic status is also not displayed in the details section of the viewissue page of the epic. Only reference I could find was to look at the history of the epic to see what its current status is.==>> Custom field epic status wasn't added to a screen...
