NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Portfolio Server. Using JIRA Portfolio Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.
For programs / portfolios with multiple projects underneath, there should be a way to easily add existing Jira projects into a plan created within the portfolio module.
By selecting an existing project for import users would be able to select the associated boards (scrum/kanban/etc...) of that project, and their associated backlog items they wish to pull into the plan.
This would automatically create the structure of the roadmap, which would be adjusted automatically as items are completed (or not), dates extended (or not), etc... that is being managed via the boards themselves.
In this way the Portfolio module would provide the following structure to a program with multiple projects:
- Overall portfolio
- Project 1
- Project 1's backlog items (epics, stories, bugs) / sprints
- Project 2
- Project 2's backlog items (epics, stories, bugs) / sprints
- Project 3
- Project 3's backlog items (epics, stories, bugs) /sprints
- Overall portfolio roadmap
- Project 1 specific roadmap
- Project 2 specific roadmap
- Project 3 specific roadmap
This would remove duplication of effort between the Agile and Portfolio module, and simplify the process to create a portfolio's structure.
