      Summary

Custom field description in Jira shows HTML tag <p> ... </p>

      Steps to reproduce:

Create custom fields in the instance

      Expected results:

Custom field description does not show any HTML tag <p> ... </p>

      Actual results

Some custom fields' description show HTML tag <p> ... </p>

      Notes

Not sure what causes this. The issue is very random and not easily reproduced, and does not happen with every instance.

      Workaround

There is currently no workaround for this issue.

Sometimes turning ON the HTML at Administration > System > Find for "Enable HTML in field descriptions and list item values" and "Enable HTML in project description" > TURN ON, could fix the issue, as the tag is interpreted rather than displayed as text, however, some Customers cannot enable this due to security reasons.

[JSWSERVER-21405] Custom field description show HTML tag <p> .. </p>

I just got this exact bug and found this thread, which is seemingly closed but I'll share here anyway.

I added a description on the Reporter field on a freshly created JSM project.

This is the text I added:

And this is what it shows on the screen:

This is the default Reporter field, not a custom field.

Hi c115de72af87, thanks for your comment!

We closed the issue with the resolution "Cannot reproduce" because we cannot reproduce it for the fields built into Jira.

However, we'd be glad if you helped us understand the problem and its circumstances. If we can confirm that it's a bug in Jira, we can reopen the ticket.

Having said that, could you help us with answers to the following questions:

            • which fields are affected in your case?
            • what is the type of the field?
            • do they come from an Atlassian, or third party plugin?
            • what are the detailed steps to reproduce the problem?

I’m not sure why this issue has been closed with the resolution cannot reproduced. Surely Atlassian should be working towards a solution so a workaround - which introduces a potential security risk - isn’t required? You'd have to assume a lot of people are using the workaround mentioned and therefore won't have voted on this issue. However, not everyone wants to or can enable HTML in field descriptions because of the potential security risk it introduces.

Hi 87122c255ac2, are you encountering this issue with custom field types coming from Jira or also from some third party plugins?
If the issues occur only for fields coming from third party plugins, I recommend reporting this issue to the plugin's vendor.

This randomly just started happening in our Jira instance on newly made custom fields, we are on 9.12.11, and it has never happened before. It is not affecting previously made custom fields. Turning on HTML does work but would be nice if we didn't have to do this.

This issue is still showing up in 9.4.15.

We are on 9.4.11. and are seeing this behavior on a custom field that was created via the third party plugin "Dynamic forms".

Also, the Summary should read "Custom field," not "Customfield." This may help others find this issue via a web search. Thanks.

How can this be "Gathering Impact" with voting turned off? When this occurs, the UI looks very unprofessional. Please add it to your backlog so it can be fixed. Thank you.
