Use a custom field to specify sprints in Greenhopper, rather than FixForVersion

    • We collect Jira feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

We need a way to specify the tasks in a particular sprint in Greenhopper other than using the FixForVersion.

Because of Greenhopper, we need to use Fix Version to record both release version for a ticket (5.1, 5.2, etc.) and sprint number (Sprint 13, 14, 15, 16, etc., all of which are bundled into release 5.1, for example). We use Jira across the enterprise by the support team, product team, engineering team and sales team. All teams need to have access to the Fix Version field (sales and support suggest versions when creating tickets, product team manages what features go in what sprints, engineering team places tickets into sprints). When another team selects an item in the Fix Version select box, they usually accidentally erase the sprint selection, because of the way a select operates. Alternatively, they sometimes think they need to select a sprint. Our Scrummaster spends about 30 minutes a day correcting these mistakes. This was the major con in our purchase decision regarding Greenhopper.

Ideally we'd like to use a custom field (from Jira) to designate the sprint that each ticket is in. That way, we could set up access (permissions) to both items appropriately.

As QC Manager of a software company, we need urgenlty this feature too and consider it as critical :

Well before GH, we use Jira and "Fix Version" to allow correctors flag which Builds QC tester can check the build.

And we use a custom field "Milestone" for flag their belonging to any form of Sprint or Milestone

We then start to adopt GH as Project Management tool.
The problem of this missing feature is in same field, in same list :

            • Few abstract Sprint are mixed with many concrete Builds
When browsing Affect Version or Fix Version, few Sprint are mixes among dozen of Builds. (in best case with regular archiving. Without, it will be unusable)
In Planning Board, our daily Builds "polluted" the Sprint List
            • 2 very different audience use same field
Sprint user are mainly Managers/Leads while Builds are engineers & testers

We can use several Workaround like making this field Multi-select (Sprint & Build)

            • But in Greenhopper Card, [Fix Version] is a one-select choice.
Same as for James, when corrector flag which build to check, it erase the Sprint Selection. The Bug "disappear" unexpectedly from Corrector's Taskboard.
            • We can use another Custom field for builds like "Fix in Build".
But in Greenhopper Card, I cannot find and add my custom Field "Fix in Build" from Configuration > Card Templates
(Issue checking in progress by our Jira Admin Martin Poirier)
Also, well before GH, we use since 2005 "Fix Version" for builds, and many of our automatic tool are based on this setting.

So basically, same situation as James, just another perspective.

            Thanks in advance!
            JC
            P.S : We are using Jira 3.13/GH 3.7.2
