Ability to Archive Custom Fields

We have a project that was being used by multiple different departments and the requirements from each team changed to be so different from one another that we had to split them out into their own projects.

The old project has a tonne of custom fields that are now not relevant and we don't want them cluttering up our site. We can't delete them however as we still need the data from the old, archived project.

It would be good if we could archive custom fields that we no longer use so that they didn't clutter up the list of fields we ARE using as it makes it hard to identify what fields we already have when setting up new projects. We don't want the field and all it's data gone, but we don't want it in our list of "active" fields.

I see there have been requests for this in the past but these have been closed. I hope this is something you would reconsider.
