Similar to how JIRA Agile will generate a card color scheme based on issue type, priority, or assignee, offer a color scheme based on workflow status.

I don't know why this issue was created and hasn't been closed yet because the status category functionality is exactly what this is (although limited). However, if you are looking for a change in the status category functionality because you think it is very limited and does not cover all use cases for JIRA, it has been said by Mark on the other issue to create new suggestions with alternative solutions to resolve this limited category functionality. Therefore, I have created a new suggestion which i hope to satisfy more JIRA use cases yet still offer the same functionality Atlassian was intending from the beginning. That issue is JRA-60386. Please vote if you agree that there needs to be a change. Hopefully this new solution will be more appealing to all JIRA users. Thanks.

In my workflow I have two odd states, "Waiting" (like waiting for a reply via email with configuration details) and "Blocked" (I can't work any more on this issue due to some internal dependency).

I'd like to be able to visually distinguish these issues (light red would be nice) from the normal issues (whom show up in blue or yellow).
