Not possible to search for empty field for a custom select list field

I have created a custom field as a select list. The field is not mandatory which implies that the field is empty if the reporter does not choose to fill it in. However, it seems to be impossible to search for all issues in which the field is empty as the value "no" is not an available search criteria.
