Currently, issue archive in Jira sets the archive column to Y and removes the issue data from the Lucene index.

While that helps the index performance, the core tables (jiraissue, changegroup, changeitem, jiraaction, worklog) still tend to grow indefinitely, unless issues are deleted.

It would be helpful if Jira had separate "archive" tables for the data to be copied over.
After years of archived issues, that could make a difference in performance
