Severity 3 - Minor
Issue Description
On the project board page when the sidebar is in the collapsed state, the links such as “Issues“, “Releases“, “Components“, etc.present in the panel have no clear meaning to indicate its functionality.
Platform: Jira DC
Version: 8.22.0
Steps to Reproduce
- Navigate to the Collapsed button in the left sidebar navigation section in the bottom section of the page and activate it.
- Navigate with a screen reader in the collapsed sidebar through the links such as “Issues“, “Releases“, “Components“, etc.
Screenshot

Actual Behaviour
In the active project, when the user navigates to the collapsed sidebar navigation, there is no clear functionality for the links such as “Issues“, “Releases“, “Components“, etc. when the screen reader navigates through the links. Visually, on activating the link and selecting the link, the content gets updated dynamically on the page. Even though the dynamically updating content is easier to understand for sighted users, the updating content is not intuitive for vision impairment users to understand.
Expected Result
When the user navigates through the links it should announce the link associated with the selected project. For eg., it should announce “Issues for KB board“, “Components for KB board“, etc. Screen reader users need to understand the element’s role in order to understand the functionality or purpose of such elements. Screen readers render web page content in a linear order for their users resulting in very often users going unaware of dynamic updates being made to the page.
