Starting a project re-index on one node triggers other nodes to start it as well (as mentioned in documentation). When you cancel project re-index operation on the one node, other nodes will still continue re-indexing.

Stopping project re-index on one node should stop it on the other ones as well. It will keep the indexes more consistent and won't create situations in which indexes on some nodes are locked, but they aren't on other nodes.
