    Description

As indicated in the guide How to Configure an Outbound HTTP and HTTPS Proxy for JIRA applications:

This Outbound Proxy configuration only works for HTTP and HTTPs request only. If you are trying to connect JIRA to a Mail Server (Gmail or Office365) or to an LDAP Server, this configuration will not work.

The suggestion is to improve the Email server configuration (both incoming and outgoing) so the it works using the proxy like any other Jira function when an outbound proxy is configured.

A reason for this limitation seems to be related to the version of JavaMail implemented in Jira, as support for proxy in JavaMail according to their FAQ, is in version 1.6 and newer, while the one implemented in Jira is 1.5.6 (as of Jira Core 7.8).
