Problem Definition
Upgrading of JIRA does not remove the older/deprecated jar files which may cause start up problem after the upgrade. This is especially when the instance is carried over the upgrade from JIRA 5 or older.
This applies to 'stock' JIRA plugins like JIRA Software or JIRA Service Desk, for example, when JIRA 8.5 is upgraded to JIRA 8.13, the Jira Software 8.5 .jar files will remain in the installed-plugins folder
Suggested Solution
During upgrade of JIRA, JIRA to check deprecated jar files and remove them accordingly before the start up.
Workaround
Remove the deprecated jar files manually.
