Recently I updated my Gentoo Linux installation:
      kernel: 3.14.14-gentoo
coreutils: 8.21 (runuser is from coreutils)

When I start JIRA with start-jira.sh, I get an error:

      runuser: Failure setting user credentials

So the latest coreutils has a broken 'runuser' or gentoo has problems with it.
Found reports about this that are from 2013 year https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/linux.gentoo.user/IthwD8PHtzQ

Ubuntu even does not have 'runuser' command. It has 'su' only

Please try to start JIRA with 'su' first, then with 'runuser' in start-jira.sh script
