    • We collect Jira feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

Along the same lines of JRA-28225, sometimes we need to notify a group of people. Groups can be useful, but Project Role is likely a more common use case for a specific JIRA issue. From there, Project Admins can also administer these as well.

Perhaps a syntax like @[PROJECT]:[ROLE] could do it.

            [JRASERVER-37793] @Mention Project Role

            Hello All,

As promised, you can mention roles now as you would mention a user in the latest update.

Please have a play with the update and thank you for your feedback, it is sincerely appreciated.

            Thank you.

            Hello All.

I'm Parthi. Part of the i0in team here in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.

We have been hard at work to create and launch an app that we hope allows users who love and use Jira every day to be able to mention a group with our app.

We are hard at work in the next iteration of our app which I know is important to you all, to be able to mention a role

I'm here to give you all a sneak preview of what you can expect from our app, please visit https://i0in.com and would love to hear all your feedback and how it can be better.

            Thank you.

Do hope we get some movement on this issue and as mentioned above Project Roles are more helpful than Jira User Groups because the Project Admins get to control who is in the Project Role (so no overhead from the jira-administrator's point of view). The (Outlook) 'distribution lists' idea mentioned is JRA-28225 is what we use now and I am not fond of it. Number 1: it takes up a license seat. Number 2: it is insecure (even if the password is not shared). Number 3: there is no way to know when the account is no longer needed so that one can re-claim that license seat. All of these issue can be solved with the ability to use @mention Project Roles (or @mention Jira User Groups). If you implement only one, I vote for the Project Role implementation but would suggest both should be implemented.
