JQL "Was In" / "During" performance too slow

      Searching JIRA with was in is quite slow.

      For example, if you search this same JIRA instance with:

      status was in (Open, "In Progress") on "2014/01/7"

      It takes 13 seconds for results to come back. Restricting it even to a single project doesn't seem to improve the result much.

      This can timeout a Confluence page that uses the jiraissues macro.
