NOTE: This bug report is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.
When I try to translate the descriptions of my custom fields I'm getting into a conflict with the description in the field configurations for those custom fields.
If I clear the description in the field configuration it refills automatically with the translation of the custom field (in the language of the the current admin user profile).
If I now change my profile language the translation of the Custom Field itself works fine. But the translation of the custom field description does not work. It is overwritten by the description of the field configuration (which before had been automatically refilled with the translation of the other language).
Findings
The description for custom field does not translate if you are upgrading from previous version of JIRA. Any newly created custom field will have the description translated properly.
Test case:
- Create a custom field on JIRA 4.2.1 and add description.
- Upgrade to JIRA 6.1.4 (note that translation of custom field was introduced in JIRA 6. See here
- Translate the custom field prior to the upgrade, assume it's Japanese
- Change Default Language to Japanese. (result: description of the custom field will not be translated)
- As a comparison, create a new custom field after the upgrade and perform step 3 & 4. You will now see that the description is translated as well
