If I add a link to an issue like "is required for" and would like to change it to "is related to" (or any other link type), the only way to do it is to delete the original link and add a new one.

There could be some icon that appears when you hover over the existing link type that takes you to some dialog or there could be an inline edit with a dropdown menu.
