Create or update version, which includes question mark characters in name, will get an error message box ("The JIRA server could not be contacted. This may be a temporary glitch or the server may be down."). After reload the version list the name includes IDs instead of question mark characters.

Example: "[28/02/12] [9????] new release" -> "[28/02/12] [9jQuery15209300565280649435_1330071943593??] new release"
