JQL fails to parse text search string with a colon in it

Create an issue with the summary

Test issue Mon Jun 20 12:28:20 PDT 2011

such as https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/TST-29105

Then search for that issue using JQL:

summary ~ "Test issue Mon Jun 20 12*"

The issue is found, possibly along with some other issues.

Now search for the same issue with

summary ~ "Test issue Mon Jun 20 12:*"

This error is displayed:

Unable to parse the text 'Test issue Mon Jun 20 12:*' for field 'summary'.

Please document this limitation at http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Advanced+Searching#AdvancedSearching-characters or even better describe how to escape a colon in this case.
