      Unintentionally I missed to specify the class attribute when specifying a workflow function...

       <workflow-function key="..." name="..." >
    <function-class&gt;...</function-class&gt;
  </workflow-function>

      ... the resulting error message was not very helpful. There was not a real hint helping me to fix the problem. A nested com.atlassian.util.concurrent.LazyReference$InitializationException: java.lang.NullPointerException
