In the current version of JIRA, it is not possible to select the Assignee drop down and begin typing an assignee's name and have the assignee be selected, or to at least navigate down to all assignees names staring with X (X being a variable/example).

In regards to improving JIRA's core usability through simple improvements for frequently and widely used components of the UI, this would be a nice win.
