This request came up during discussion after Scott's presentation at the JIRA 4.0 Launch in SF. The request was raised by a customer, and others mentioned that it's a question often asked.

Document how to make sure I or my users get a daily summary of updated issues rather than continual notifications each time an issue is updated.

Later discussions with the tech writers revealed that you can do this by creating a filter on date last updated, subscribing to the filter and turning off notifications. You can also fine tune your filter via JQL if necessary.
