read flag for issues / comments

XMLWordPrintable

This is a request from one of our other users. Basically the idea is to allow a user to see issues for which there is new information he hasn't seen yet.

It is easy to get swamped by the number of issues. It would be helpful if the server would be configured to keep track of whether a user has read an issue or comment. This way it would be possible to search for "issues I have not read yet", much like is possible on most bulletin board forum software. (and if there's a new comment, reset the flag for that user-issue pair.)

The email notification feature allows the server to avoid having to keep track of issue-read state, but this only applies for issues that a user receives notification for.

Yes, this would require at least M*N bits, where M = # of users, N = number of issues, so maybe it's unfeasible for large issue databases, but even for modest databases where, say, M=100, N=10000 you are still talking only 10^6 bits of storage.
