Is there a way to mark developers as "left the company" in order that they don't show up as options when assigning any bugs or tasks in future?

It seems the only options in the version we are using are:
1) Deleting them (not desirable); or
2) Unticking them as developers (in which case they don't show up in the drop-down menu).
