Summary

Provide a user-selectable option (a toggle or view setting) to display board grouping (Category, Assignee, Priority) as vertical columns, in addition to the current swimlane (horizontal row) layout. This would restore the pre-harmonisation column-based grouping experience as a choice, while keeping the new swimlane layout available.

Problem / Use case

Following the board grouping harmonisation change, grouping by Category now renders as swimlanes rather than columns. Multiple customers relied on the previous column-based layout for their day-to-day board workflow (for example, using categories as columns to scan and manage work horizontally). With the change, there is no way to return to the column presentation, and there is no self-service toggle to do so. This is a workflow regression for teams whose process was built around column grouping.

Requested behavior

• Add a view setting or toggle that lets users choose how a grouping is displayed: as columns or as swimlanes.

• Apply the choice to grouping fields such as Category, Assignee, and Priority.

• Preserve the current swimlane behavior as the default, so no existing behavior is forced to change.

• Persist the user or board preference so it does not reset between sessions.

Impact if not addressed

• Teams that depended on column-based category grouping lose an established workflow with no equivalent replacement.

• Customers have raised this through multiple support tickets, indicating recurring demand rather than an isolated request.
