Issue Summary
Adding a user to a Jira guest group is not sufficient for guest access to work. For the system to recognize a user as a guest, every guest group must be manually marked as the default guest role group - otherwise users are not recognized as guests and experience unexpected behavior (e.g., being redirected to the JSM Service Portal instead of their assigned project).
Steps to Reproduce
- Current behavior — additional manual steps required after creating a guest group:
- Go to admin.atlassian.com → Apps → Atlassian apps
- Search for the site, locate Jira → click Manage app
- Find the guest group → click ⋯ → Update default setting → set as default
This must be repeated for every guest group, including future ones.
Expected Results
The default setting should be applied automatically when a group is assigned the guest role - no separate manual action should be required.
Why this is a problem:
- This is a known limitation (to reduce Identity service traffic) but is not documented publicly
- The public docs (Manage guest access in Jira, Invite guests to Jira) make no mention of this required step
- Admins following the documented process end up with broken guest access and no clear error or guidance
Workaround
Update the default setting manually.
