Current behavior/limitation

When users search in the Parent field dropdown, Jira:

• Runs a search for valid parent Work Items.
• Returns and displays only a small, fixed list of the top matches (around 20).

This usually means:

• The dropdown shows only the most recently viewed or updated matching Work Items.
• Older or less‑recently‑updated, but still valid, parents may not appear at all.

This is an intentional performance optimization in Jira Cloud to keep the dropdown fast, especially on sites with many Work Items and complex hierarchies.

Workaround

If the desired parent Work Item is not visible in the Parent dropdown, type the Parent Issue’s Summary to try to bring it into the top matches.
