Summary
Currently, Jira Cloud does not provide a straightforward way to transform or change a project type (e.g., from a Software project to a Business project, or from a Team-managed project to a Company-managed project). Customers who need to make such changes face significant challenges, including:
- Manually recreating custom fields in the destination project
- Migrating issues while maintaining their integrity (e.g., issue hierarchy, workflows, and other configurations)
- Losing project-specific settings and customizations during the manual migration process
- High chances of human error, which may lead to data inconsistencies or loss during the process
This lack of functionality creates frustration for users and consumes significant time and resources, especially for organizations managing multiple projects or transitioning to new workflows
Proposed solution
Introduce a feature in Jira Cloud that allows users to seamlessly transform a project from one type to another. This transformation process should include the following capabilities:
- Allow users to transform a Software project into a Business project and vice versa
- Allow users to convert Team-managed projects into Company-managed projects and vice versa
- Automatically migrate all custom fields, workflows, issue types, and project settings to the destination project type, ensuring no loss of data or functionality
- Maintain the issue hierarchy (e.g., Epics, Stories, Sub-tasks) and relationships during the transformation
