Misleading character limit error message and extra content added lost

      Summary

      Jira Cloud's text fields have a limit to the number of chars they can store

      • Single-line: 255 characters max
      • Paragraph: 32700 characters max

      When users try to enter content that exceeds the limits they will see error messages like the following one

      We couldn't update the X value
      
      You can try again in a few minutes, or refresh the page.
      
      Try editing the field again
      

      That gives the idea the field has simply ran into an unexpected behaviour and entering the same value would work.

      How to replicate

      • Copy a content that has more than 32700 chars and try to paste it into a paragraph field (also works with Description)
      • Click on Save after pasting the content

      Expected result

      You will see an error message stating that the limit of chars was exceeded and will be able to edit the content you entered.

      Actual result

      You see that misleading error message and the content is simply lost, the field will revert to the value prior to the edit attempt

      Workarounds

      In case you run into that error message, check the amount of chars you are trying to enter into the field.
