Improve Pasting Functionality: Replace Selected Plain Text with URL Instead of Hyperlinking

    • 1
    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Summary:

Currently, when selecting plain text and pasting a URL using Cmd/Ctrl + V, the selected text is hyperlinked instead of being replaced by the URL. It would enhance user experience if the paste action replaced the selected text with the URL directly.

      Workarounds:

      1. Delete or cut the text you wish to replace using Cmd/Ctrl + X, then paste the URL with Ctrl + V.
      2. After the initial pasting, which creates a hyperlink, you can edit it to be inline as shown in the screenshot provided.
      3. Use Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + V to paste the URL as plain text instead of an inline link.
      4. Paste the URL twice to achieve the desired result.

This seems like unusual behavior for any text editor. I can’t think of any other editors which treat paste as a formatting operation.

MS Word can do that but only if you select “paste formatting” explicitly.

So, it’s a surprise to users, partly because the change is not immediately visible (while the text is still highlighted after the paste completes).
