Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.
Allow the backlog view in team-managed (formerly next-gen) projects to sort the order of issues by fields like priority.

[JRACLOUD-87232] Ability to sort / order / reorder by field in team-managed backlog
Faced the same project today. Painful and doesn't seem like a big deal.
One of the most painful parts of being an Atlassian customer is googling the most obvious options that you somehow can't find in the menu, only to discover that Atlassian is 'collecting feedback' for five years,
Having a big backlog, it's really a pain to order it manually by priority.
I really need this feature
Please
It would be a great feature and so usefull.
Consider developing it, please
I definitely agree that this would be a huge value-lift to our projects! I'd love to see this implemented!
What's worse, is that in theory you can create a custom filter and add "order by" in it, so you get your hopes up. But that clause doesn't seem to work when the filter is applied.
Adding my voice. Very basic stuff enabling a central concept in development.
The order in the backlog is being altered every time I close an issue
Other filters work but not Priority. Anyway to bump this feature?
Is this going to be solved by https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-17446 ?
I concur. This is an urgent need when using the backlog tab of team-managed project. The other only option seems to rely on customer filter from the issues view which has a lot of friction (e.g. not possible to drag/drop to next sprint)
It's so frustrating this is still NOT a thing. Does anyone know what field is being set when issues are dragged up and down in the backlog that we might be able to at least create a filter which will mirror the ordering?
priority shouldn't exist as a field without being sortable... clear need!
This is a critical feature to any kind of automation where tasks are being created via the Jira API, and need to be assigned a specific priority/order in the backlog, or just at the least, place it at the top of the swimlane instead of the bottom.
+1, is this really not implemented yet? This is making me considering other tools if true..
+1 ! This feature is very important for me, it is really tedious to have to sort manually my tickets
I also vote for this improvement. In my case I'd like to sort tickets by priority, but I can also see value in sorting by an arbitrary column.
I would like to contribute here.
As a person managing priorities I really need to sort my PBIs based on a value from custom field, so I could easily communicate the current state of priorities
+1 for this please! Currently using custom fields for priority scoring but have to sort manually
Things like this forcing me to consider not just migration to another board in Jira, but to YouTrack. Lack of such basic features generates hatred for the product.
This feels like it should be part of the core functionality of Next Gen boards. It's one of those things where you don't think about it til the board is under usage and when things start to accelerate and you need this functionality it's a big shocker to find out it's not implemented or planned but just "gathering interest". Switching to the other board now feels like it would be super cumbersome so we're kind of locked in with this inconvenience until this gets implemented.
You're kidding.. "Simple" should be "simpler for customers". So I need to manually drag&drop my backlog issues to reflect the priority?
I'm working on a project with a large backlog and being able to sort by Priority and Epic would be really useful. I've spent a lot of time sorting and grouping the backlog manually which is time consuming.
Hello @Mike Wilkins,
I partially agree your opinion. When you have a big list with many issues (that case is not rare, just considerate a society who has import issues from an old tool, with years of minor issues, of major issues... and it's juste one case, there are many others), I think it's an error to consider a product owner has time to sort hundreds of issue manually via an Excel file.
I think a functionnality, made to help PO to priorize, with some good alerts well placed (ex. : "Be careful, you're modifying the priority orders of 123 issues, would you continue ?") would be very helpful.
I hope my english isn't too bad
Have a good day,
Concerned by comments here about sorting the backlog. You need to review what the purpose of the backlog is - it is to enable the Product Owner to order according to the business priority of the PBI. It is a subjective assessment. A PO may decide that a new feature is a higher priority than a critical bug. That is their prerogative. As such a manual ordering of PBIs is desirable.
If you really want to sort the backlog, use the Excel plug in to extract the backlog (order by rank to keep the same order) and sort in Excel to your heart's content.

Kindly add the sort by "Type" feature for backlog board. Sorting by Story / Bug.
Thanks,
Amol
Please integrate sorting by priority asap,
otherwise why we should pay for Jira Cloud, if whiteboard on my kitchen would work even better?
how can you release backlog feature without sorting by priority? do you seriously think we all have screens where we see about 300 tasks in backlog?
Would be great to implement the prioritization asap, I am currently being challenged and even asked to find an alternative to Jira dude to this repetitive issues and lack of basic features.
I have no idea why anyone would want to use Next-Gen ... almost all the core features are missing. It is quite annoying, I now have to re-create my Project. Atlassian should tell folks up-front what is missing (along with listing the new features). I feel as though you are expecting us to QA your product. Very disappointing.
I highly recommend to everyone that they should wait at least 1 additional year before trying on any Atlassian "new features"!
A core function of any software dev backlog.
Please add this feature.
we have a long list of card's all the time so this improvement would be very useful to us...
Cheers,
+1
