URL field type opens the link in the same browser tab instead of opening in a new tab.

      Issue Summary

      URL field type is opening internal and external links in the same tab.

      Tested browser:

      • Google Chrome;
      • Safari.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Create a new or use an old custom URL field type;
      2. Add an URL like "https://atlassian.com";
      3. Click on the link and the page will load in the same tab instead of opening a new one.

      Expected Results

      The page should open in a new tab, or at least external pages should open in a new tab.

      Actual Results

      Any internal or external page/link in the URL field type opens in the same tab.

      Workaround

      Currently there is no known workaround for this behavior. A workaround will be added here when available

            [JRACLOUD-84891] URL field type opens the link in the same browser tab instead of opening in a new tab.

            Checking in on this. Are the related bugs that I mentioned being tracked elsewhere? Or is everything being worked on here? Smart-links are not helpful for a lot of teams and they need the links to show the full URL. They also should open in a new tab on click and all links should be clickable.

            One last thing that I was chatting with support about is how the custom fields rendering as smart-links does not seem to be tied to the personal preferences at https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/link-preferences

            Users along with admins should have control over how these appear since sometimes the full URL is more helpful than the smart-link.

            Here are the things that seem to be needed from my perspective:

            • atlassian.com and strings formatted in that way should show as a link and not text in single line custom fields
            • any links across all parts of a Jira issue (system fields, custom fields, comments, etc.) should follow your personal preferences at https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/link-preferences for how they display
            • users should be able to manually toggle all links manually at least between URL and Inline display options on an ad hoc basis separate from their default preference (makes sense that Card and Embed cannot fit everywhere)
            • clicking any link anywhere within an Atlassian product should open in a new tab

            Might make sense to just revert the smart-links within custom fields until it is ironed out.  Thanks!

            FYI, another thing we noticed related to the smart links being added into custom text fields is that single-line text fields with web content without an http:// prefix that previously rendered as links are no longer doing so. For example, before the smart link change, atlassian.com would render as a clickable link in a text field (would also open in a new tab on click). Now, that remains as plain text in the field.
